What kind of punks steal other people's stuff? Make something yourself!" And that's something that can't be stolen from me. "I loved every moment of that show, er, truck. Ten years of attention to detail, and then, poof, gone! It's an empty feeling," he – nominally, Mike – tells his followers.įrom there Allen erases the pretense of separation between himself and his character. ![]() Nevertheless, Mike's final entry in his confessional Outdoor Man vlog was anything but. "I've been thinking a lot about makers and takers, you know, because I had something very valuable taken from me: Somebody took my truck. Mike Baxter is conservative too, but Kevin Abbott, the final showrunner in a line of them spanning back to the show's creator Jack Burditt, has long insisted that he's a centrist. Allen is one of Hollywood's most unabashed Trump supporters. The welled-up tears in their eyes, especially Allen's, are real.Ĭonflating Allen's persona with that of Mike Baxter has been the show's selling point and, depending on who you are, its drawback. What we're really watching is the actors holding a wake for their departing show. One by one family and friends share tributes that grow increasingly warmer and heartfelt, and the viewer understands it's not about the truck, or the Baxters. Mike, played by Tim Allen, spent 10 years restoring that truck, and he loved it so much that the family organizes a wake in its honor. The final half hour of " Last Man Standing" finds the Baxter family mourning the theft of Mike Baxter's classic pickup. ![]() These lovingly crafted revisits of nostalgic properties have proven to be - outside of a couple hiccups like Prime’s doors - great successes so far. Fans of early 00’s gaming have had a great week playing Metroid Prime Remastered and the new Game Boy emulators added to Switch. I have to say, the timing of this “remaster” could not be worse. Readers, I can’t tell you how awful it is to spite finish a video game for review, but that’s just what I did with Tales of Symphonia Remastered. I am trapped in a reverse Goldilocks scenario where I have access to two bowls of “just right” porridge, but I have to eat every bite of a third bowl that tastes like Baby Bear got his boogers all up in it. I won’t lie - I am a little upset about the sorry state of the Switch “remaster.” What makes me more upset, though, is that I own both the GCN and PS3 versions of this game, and I have to finish the worst version of it to complete this review. On PS3, it is a similar story: while the framerate is 30 fps, it also looks, sounds, and plays better than this Switch “remaster.” This is exceptionally frustrating, because each version (including the PS2 version) has gotten progressively worse, a unique achievement in mediocrity. Checking my original copy of Symphonia on GameCube (with EON’s GCHD add-on attached for HDMI support), I determined that it looked, sounded, and played much better on GameCube: there is no input lag, the framerate is a rock-solid 60fps, menus are transparent, voices are clearer, load times feel shorter and less frequent, and the textures look more uniform - in the remaster, many background textures look stretched, and highlighted/foreground textures look a bit glossy. Except Sheena who is busy ‘mirin.Īfter getting reacquainted with the game’s cast, setting, and themes, I began to feel a paranoia that this isn’t the Symphonia I remember: loading screens are rampant and entirely black or white, menu backgrounds are not transparent, the controls feel wonky and delayed, and the framerate seems inconsistent. The Symphonia crew looks out at the horizon. When I revisited these opening hours in this “remaster,” I couldn’t help but feel that something was off. I love the opening few hours of Symphonia, as it hits familiar light-hearted first-area vibes, but it also doesn’t wait around to address heavy stuff throughout this game, Colette and gang encounter great injustices like mass torture, slavery, and genocide, all while they grapple with the traumas of death and general adolescence. Its opening hours follow cute, big-hearted teen Lloyd and his friend, studious boy Genis, as they seek to accompany this game’s “Chosen One,” Colette, on her adventure to open elemental seals and save the world. Tales of Symphonia Remastered starts out like a familiar trip down memory lane. While it is admittedly more readily available, it is ostensibly the worst way to play Tales of Symphonia. ![]() It provides no new updates or upgrades (in fact, it has less content than its predecessor because it lacks the Dawn of the New World spin-off included in Chronicles), runs at an unsteady 30 fps, has terrible load times, has input lag when docked, crashes on occasion (especially before cutscenes), and has compromised audiovisual quality. Tales of Symphonia Remastered, on the other hand, is not a good game - especially on Nintendo Switch. Tales of Symphonia Chronicles on the PlayStation 3 is also a pretty good game: it displays the original in HD, has extra content, and it runs reasonably smoothly (despite its downgrade in framerate from the GCN original). I have fond memories of renting Symphonia on the GameCube over and over from a local video rental store in the 2000s, and I think it still holds up today. ![]() The original Tales of Symphonia for Nintendo GameCube is a good game. When a player starts the game, after choosing their race, he or she will select one starter class. Players are allowed to select two starter classes, two intermediate classes, and one advanced class. Every character is composed of up to 5 classes. Dungeon Lords puts a spin on this classic concept by allowing players to develop and customize their avatar. In many games, players have the option of choosing a class. ![]() ![]() In 37 AC, Maegor's father, King Aegon I, died, and his half-brother Aenys ascended the throne as King Aenys I Targaryen. In both 29 AC and 30 AC Maegor assisted the master of ships, Lord Aethan Velaryon, and the Hand of the King, Ser Osmund Strong, in two campaigns against the pirate king Sargoso Saan in the Stepstones, and in 31 AC defeated the Giant of the Trident. He was knighted by his father, King Aegon I, at the age of sixteen, making his the youngest knight in the realm at the time. In 28 AC, he won renown a tourney by defeating three knights of the Kingsguard in the joust, and next winning the mêlée. Maegor had more success in his military accomplishments. Though Maegor boasted that he had conceived a child on his wedding night, the marriage remained barren. Instead, Maegor was betrothed to the High Septon's niece, Lady Ceryse Hightower, whom he married in 25 AC at the Starry Sept in Oldtown in a ceremony presided over by the High Septon himself. In 23 AC, shortly after Maegor had turned eleven, Queen Visenya suggested a betrothal between Rhaena and Maegor to settle the succession issue, but both Rhaena's parents and the High Septon protested. After Rhaena's birth, the issue arose as to whether Maegor would fall behind her in the line of succession. Maegor's brother Aenys had married Lady Alyssa Velaryon in 22 AC, and their daughter Rhaena was born the next year. When his good-sister Alyssa Velaryon teased him that he was afraid of dragons, Maegor scowled and replied that only one was worthy of him. Despite the fact that there were several dragon hatchlings on Dragonstone, Maegor never claimed a dragon of his own. His mother gave him her Valyrian steel sword, Dark Sister, as a nameday present when Maegor turned thirteen in 25 AC. By the age of twelve, he was already unhorsing boys four and five years his elder in the lists and battering seasoned men-at-arms into submission in the castle yard, and by the age of thirteen he was already defeating hardened knights in mêlées. Maegor was trained at arms by Ser Gawen Corbray, the master-at-arms of Dragonstone. Regardless, when Maegor was eight, he stabbed to death a palfrey which had kicked him, and slashed half the face off the stableboy who came running towards the animal's screams. He supposedly immediately butchered a cat with the sword, although some doubt the truth of this tale. He received his first sword at the age of three, and took to swordplay at once. Maegor and Aenys were not close as children Maegor was raised by his mother on Dragonstone, and in time became known as the "Prince on Dragonstone". As a babe, he was a big and healthy child almost twice as heavy as his half-brother Aenys had been. That son, Maegor, was born the next year, on Dragonstone. In 11 AC, Queen Visenya Targaryen announced that she was pregnant with a son. Instead of a shirt of scale, Maegor wore a breastplate, covered by a surcoat that displays the Targaryen three-headed dragon, red on black. His armor, however, was more elaborate than Aegon's. Maegor wore his father's Valyrian steel-and-ruby crown. Although he had many companions throughout his youth, he had no true friends, and even as an adult Maegor trusted no one. He preferred fire and steel over settling issues through discussion, and showed cruel tendencies early in his childhood. He was a rigid man, unyielding, and unbending. Maegor was quarrelsome, quick to take offense, slow to forgive, and fearsome in his wroth. His savagery in the field and his harshness toward defeated enemies was frequently remarked upon. However, he was also a hard and brutal man who craved violence, death, and absolute mastery over all he deemed his. He lived for war, tourneys, and battle, and rose to become one of the youngest and finest knights of his time. Maegor was a born warrior whose skill with weapons was unmatched. ![]() He had angry-looking, suspicious eyes, and a scowling mouth. He kept his hair short and his beard trimmed to his jawline. Though he was on the heavy side, he was not fat, but more massive and square. He was bull-like, with heavy shoulders, a thick neck, and huge arms. Maegor was a tall, broad, and fearsomely strong man, larger than his father, Aegon I Targaryen. ![]() The choice of the output method, as well as the buffer size (among other less significant factors) on a software player side, alters the sound. DirectSound, WASAPI, Kernel Streaming, ASIO) will produce different sound, even though all methods provide bit-perfect output when volume is set to maximum – I don’t recommend reducing volume in the system mixer or in a software player as this will lower resolution (unless JPLAY BitPerfect volume control is used). It doesn’t matter which player are you using, switching between various output methods (i.e. It will sound smoother, more dynamic, more detailed and with a better control. You want the 1ms or the minimum latency setting. The values are often shown in milliseconds, but can be also presented descriptively e.g. Not all DAC drivers come with a buffer size/latency adjustment, but if yours does, I highly recommend setting it to the lowest value. This is one of the things that have the biggest effect on sound quality in a computer audio setup. Adjust latency in USB DAC’s control panel For Windows PCs it is also a good idea to make a fresh OS installation once a year or so as Windows registry gets bigger and fragmented over time which lowers performance as well. The best thing you can do is to set up a dedicated operating system with nothing else installed on it except for a USB DAC driver and a software player or media server software (if it’s a music server). You may think that it’s nothing for your latest PC with high-speed CPU and lots of RAM, but the truth is anything that’s running on your PC during audio playback has a bad impact on sound quality. The more software you load on your PC, the slower it runs. Keep the operating system fresh with the number of running apps at a minimum |
